 Electric Scooters will provide the initial take off in Electric transportation. China is leading the way with unprecedented growth in Electric Bikes and now BMW is up to the race. We have seen quite a few scooters already introduced over the last year scheduled to be on the market in 2011-2012: Honda, Yamaha, Peugeot and Mini to name just a few from the established auto makers.

Innovative development study with
electric drive.

Space is becoming increasingly scarce in the major conurbation centres and traffic density is growing continuously. Political and social conditions are changing. All these factors coalesce in increasing demands in terms of private transportation. The concept vehicle BMW E-Scooter with electric drive provides an innovative look at changing urban mobility needs.

While the currently available, purely electrically-powered scooters have been almost exclusively used inside towns and cities to date due to their performance and range, which makes them suitable for short distances only, the concept vehicle BMW E-Scooter offers a much broader spectrum of use.

High range and excellent performance figures.
Since it was conceived as a future-oriented vehicle for commuting between urban areas and the city centre, therefore attracting funding from the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development, there were two main requirements for its development: dynamic figures comparable to those of a maxi scooter with a combustion engine and a high range in realistic conditions of use.

The concept vehicle BMW E-Scooter provides the necessary sustained output and maximum speed for safe and reliable overtaking on urban motorways and also when carrying two people. It is also easily capable of managing hill starts on steep slopes with a pillion passenger.

The development study also has the necessary maximum output to be able to achieve acceleration figures within the important 0 - 60 km/h range, which are at the level of current maxi scooters powered by a 600 cc combustion engine.

The high storage capacity of the battery allows a daily driving range of over 100 kilometres. In this way, the BMW E-Scooter concept vehicle provides a long-term, zero-emissions urban and suburban travel option which is suitable for everyday use.

Fast charging at conventional power sockets.
The E-Scooter concept vehicle's battery is charged at regular household power sockets as found in Europe, the USA, Canada and Japan, so no special charging station is required. When the battery is completely flat, the charging period is less than three hours. However, practical experience has shown that the battery rarely runs out completely, so charging times are generally shorter.

Frame.
Unlike existing maxi scooters with combustion engines, the concept vehicle does not have a main frame. Instead, the aluminium battery casing - which also contains the electronic system required for battery cell monitoring - takes over the function of the frame. The steering head support is connected to it, as is the rear frame and the left-hand mounted single swing arm with directly hinged, horizontally installed shock absorber.

Electric machine, power electronics and charging device.
Due to its high output, the BMW Motorrad development study has no hub motor with direct drive or planetary gearbox. Instead, the high-performance electric machine is mounted behind the battery casing. The secondary drive consists of a toothed belt from the electric machine to the belt pulley mounted coaxially on the swinging fork pivot with drive pinion. From here, power transmission occurs via roller chain to the rear wheel.

When the E-Scooter is decelerated in trailing throttle or when braking, the energy released
is recuperated, thereby increasing the vehicle's range by between 10 and 20 per cent depending on driving profile.

The electrical components required for the electric drive are installed on the top of the battery casing. The external battery electronics system permanently collects and monitors data such as the temperature and voltage of the battery cells, both during travel and while charging. The power electronics acts as a control system and controls the electric machine. The charging device includes a charge cable which allows the battery to be recharged at a conventional household power socket. In addition to the other components like an ISO insulation monitor, high-voltage indicator and a high-voltage distributor, a DC-DC converter is included. It is required to change high voltage to low voltage power to supply the 12 volt vehicle supply and especially for the control units.

Cooling system.
During travel, the electric machine and power electronics are liquid-cooled as is the charging device during charging. An electric coolant pump ensures coolant circulation through the radiator. While a coolant is commonly used for the battery in electrically powered cars, the E-Scooter concept vehicle uses an air cooling system in order to save space.

Safety.
BMW Motorrad is one of the very few motorcycle manufacturers to be able to draw on its own experience and expertise in the automobile field in the development of electrically powered vehicles. Synergies are derived from the development of the BMW E-Scooter concept vehicle not just in the ready availability of technical components but also in the area of high voltage engineering and the associated safety requirements. Here for the first time,
standards established by the leading automobile manufacturer relating to high voltage safety (> 60 volt)and functional reliability are being applied to a two-wheel vehicle with electric drive."

  Lithium technology is taking over conventional Lead Acid batteries now - it is the huge market and will spike further demand for lithium. Auto makers are pushing now for start stop technology in order to reduce emissions during the urban driving cycle. It will be another very important market for the Lithium based batteries apart from Electric Cars and Plug-In Hybrids. Porsche is already using Lithium batteries in some of its models with CEs. The price/quality as always will determine the adoption rate here.

  India will be another huge market for EVs: Electric Bikes and Electric Scooters like the one above. If it can grow like in China, in time we will have another exponential growth in the market driven by population, pollution, congestion and ability to power your ride from the socket at home.

"India's government will soon introduce a robust incentive plan to promote the use of electric vehicles (EVs). The scheme, laid out by India's Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles and approved by the nation's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, will provide manufacturers of EVs with incentives of up to 20 percent, subject to a capped limit, on each battery-powered vehicle sold.

Though the approved plan provides incentives for most everything that rolls along using electric power, it's expected to boost the sales of battery-powered two-wheelers more than anything else. The cap on incentives is laid out as follows: 4,000 INR ($90 U.S. at the current exchange rate) for low-speed electric two-wheelers, 5,000 INR ($110 U.S.) for high-speed battery-powered two-wheelers and 100,000 INR ($2,196 U.S.) for electric cars. The incentives seem measly, but considering that the average electric two-wheeler sold in India costs just 25,000 INR ($549 U.S.), the kickback is actually way more significant than one might assume.

Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles director Sohinder Gill outlined the projected impact of India's incentive scheme, stating:
This could have an immediate impact on sales of electric two-wheelers. In terms of monthly sales, we expect an immediate doubling of sales. Moreover, those electric vehicle makers who were getting frustrated, will now feel encouraged to grow the market further. Although these incentives are for the manufacturers to carry out R&D activities and to increase capacities, we will surely pass on partial benefits to the buyers.
At present, India's electric two-wheeler market tops out at around 85,000 units annually. A doubling, expected to come courtesy of the incentive program, would rocket segment sales to 170,000 strong."

Chinese Electric Bikes output surpassed 20 mil in 2007. They were not all with Lithium ion batteries and they were not as nice as this Electric scooter below, but trend in Asia for personal mobility in the form of scooters or bikes is unmistakeably exponentially up. With players like Yamaha entering the market we can expect a better quality and range with Lithium ion technology. It will be a nice additional drive to our Lithium Demand picture.

Everywhere we turn motorcycle manufacturers keep designing electric motorcycles. Now Yamaha seems to be jumping on the green bandwagon too with their “smart minimal commuter” EC-03.

The zero-emission green scooter has a lithium iron battery pack provided by Sanyo Electric Co., a subsidiary of Panasonic Corp. Riders can get a single recharge from a regular socket for a maximum cruising of 27 miles. For right now engineers suggest not pushing it past 15 miles though, which makes the scooter helpful in shorter city commutes.

Yamaha plans on investing $70 million from now until 2012 in an effort to bring affordable green bike technology to different areas. This and their half-century experience with two wheelers will be the driving force that will take Yamaha to the top of the electric bike market.

The EC-03 debuts in Tokyo this September, and will set you back about $2,700. So far, there are no plans to release the scooter to the U.S. market, but overseas sales will be the barometer for future domestic distribution. So if you’re looking for a trendy way to save the earth, and you happen to be relocating to Tokyo, keep your eyes and ears out for the EC-03."

Every new electric bike needs an electric motor and a lithium pack. Powerful light weight and low volume electric motors are made with rare earth magnets. Old technology with lead based batteries gives its way to green lithium one. Rare Earth Elements became a fast growing market in Asia and now this trend comes to the West as well. REE investment theme is catching up in USA and Canada with the rising demand for strategic commodities.

36 volt vs. 24 volt36 volt systems boast faster speeds, quicker acceleration, greater range and better hill climbing capability than 24 volt systems. 24 volt systems are typically used on slower models that require pedal assistance to operate. Recharging battery packs Simply plug your battery pack into any standard 110 volt wall outlet. You can leave the battery pack on your ebike or take it off on most models. Charging takes about four hours and costs just pennies per charge. Safety circuitry guarantees that the battery pack cannot be overcharged.
Maintaining battery packs Plug in your battery pack after every use. Lithium batteries are memory-free batteries and do not require a full discharge before recharging.
Life of the battery pack

Lithium-ion manganese batteries typically can be fully charged and fully discharged 500 to 1000 times which translates to 10,000 to 20,000 miles with average usage. Lead Acid packs are only good for about 100 full charges.

At the recent Interbike trade show in Las Vegas, an explosion of companies touted the Lance Armstrong-like powers of the electric bike -- a pedal-powered bike with an electric motor for extra speed when you need it. Although E-bikes haven't caught on in the United States as they have in Europe and Japan, makers say high gas prices, the obesity crisis, better lithium-ion rechargeable batteries and a wave of green consciousness make them right for the times. This review includes two styles of electric bikes: "pedal-assist," in which the rider must keep pedaling to actuate the engine, and "throttle," in which the motor can work independently.

Likes: It looks and feels like a normal bike, until you turn on the quiet, smooth engine with its four power-acceleration settings that accelerate your own pedaling input by 25%, 50%, 100% and 200%. As with all the bikes reviewed here: The more you pedal, the longer the 36-volt lithium-manganese battery lasts. The 7200+ is also "regenerative," meaning that it recharges somewhat with braking and can be set to regenerative mode while on downhills. Claimed mileage for a single full charge, with pedaling, is 40 miles. Recharging is relatively fast: 90% charge in 2 1/2 hours, 100% in 3 1/2 hours. The 6-pound battery slides out of the rack for remote charging. The 7200+ weighs 45 pounds, light as electric bikes go, and is the low end of Trek's three-bike Plus electric line. For commuting, go to the fender- and disc-brake-equipped Valencia+ ($2,500).

Instant Armstrong

Currie Technologies iZip Express: Twenty-six-inch-wheel bike with suspension forks and seat post, a giant in-frame battery, and a powerful 750-watt / 1-horsepower engine in the rear hub.Likes: The giant motor leaves you feeling supercharged. Working moderately hard (not all-out), I went 25 mph up a long hill in a head wind. The 36-volt lithium-ion battery has five levels of assist; claimed range on a full charge is 31 miles on high-power mode, 45 miles on standard mode, and more than 50 on economy mode. Top speed on flat ground with minimal rider pedaling is 20 mph. Currie Technologies is one of the country's biggest E-bike distributors. This is its highest-end bike.

Dislikes: iZip is heavy, takes 6 to 8 hours to recharge, and isn't cheap. Price: $2,999. (800) 377-4532; http://www.currietech.com/.

Throttle-twisting econo-cruiser

Pedego: Comfy, low-slung, relatively low-priced six-speed cruiser designed for hill-averse, nonathletic baby boomers. It has big balloon tires, a rack battery and a rear-hub engine controlled by a hand throttle that does not require pedaling.Likes: Great fun, cool looks, good options. Unlike the previous "pedal-assist" test bikes, you can choose whether you want pedal-only, throttle-only or both at once. It's great not to pedal when you don't want to and helpful to know exactly where you are in terms of effort. With the seat set back and low from the cranks, the bike has a comfy, erect-back seating position. The removable, 36-volt, 500-watt lithium battery pack recharges relatively fast: 80% in one hour and 100% in four hours. Speed governed to 20 mph (motor only -- faster if you pedal), so legal on bike paths. By far the lowest price of the group.


Dislikes: Not great at standing hill-climbing position because of the relaxed seating position and high handlebars. Heavy at 60 pounds. Price: $1,595. (949) 336-8333; http://www.pedego.com/.

Mini motorcycle

UltraMotor Metro: Aluminum, full-suspension, seven-speed commuter with small (20-inch), wide (3-inch) tires, rear-hub engine, a hand throttle and a lithium-ion battery pack hidden within the scooter-style frame.Likes: Like the Pedego, it has a comfy, fun feeling and a 36-volt, 500-watt motor that requires no pedal assist to go 20 miles at 20 mph; greater speeds can be attained with pedaling. Range is 40 miles with pedal assist. Adding a second battery pack can double the range. Includes a real-time state of charge indicator.

TNR Gold has announced that its exploration team is already on the grounds of its Lithium and REE properties in Canada. Junior is up to 0.25CAD on the news and volume is over 1 million shares. More funds are taken positions, financing was oversubscribed and Canada Zinc Metals CZX.v came into the picture with its Chinese partners Tongling. Media is full of electric cars and electric bikes stories: some reports suggested that in China in 2008 22 million electric bikes were sold alone. Chinese interest is understandable: TNR Gold still below last year level of 0.35CAD financing without any Lithium and REE properties. Los Azules is shaping into huge Copper deposit with NPV over 1 billion with Copper price above 2.1 USD/lb. Who knows better then Chinese where the commodity prices are going? We like to see that the company is not just sitting and playing on all these developments alone, but advancing its new Lithium and REE start up International Lithium Corp and preparing Alaska properties for Gold surpassing 1000 USD/oz. Will we have another spin out from TNR Gold this time of Alaska Gold and Copper next year?

Maybe not these ones will become a consumer hit, but further down the road we will have additional demand for Lithium from places like China. Indonesia and Vietnam. Electric Bikes there are much cheaper and already taking the roads.

YOU want to junk the car, but you're just too lazy to cycle.
Then this might just be the answer - the world's fastest electric bike.
Already hugely popular in China, electric bikes are now available in the UK.
Strict rules governing vehicles in the UK mean they can not go faster than 15 mph on a public road or they will require road tax.
So although a special 'boost' button is available to rocket you to a top speed of 25 mph on private property, it won't be legal to use it in traffic.
The battery takes five hours to charge - which the manufacturers boast will cost a grand total of 7p - and let's you cover 20 miles.
The catch is that the new creation will cost £2,000 - which is not far from the cost of a new scooter. It is not the lightest either - with a lithium ion battery weighing in at 6kg.
But the creators of the A2B bikes believe they will help encourage consumers to have more thought for the environment.
There's no doubt that it will turn heads. It's radical design and virtually noiseless motor caused more than one pedestrian to do a double take in our road test.
Already 21 million bikes have been sold in China in the last year and they are becoming rapidly more popular in Germany.
Last week Charlie Lloyd, cycling development officer from the London Cycling Campaign, said he was sceptical about its use in London.
He said: 'The disadvantage is that you have to charge it and the battery tends not to last very long if you go fast and push them hard.
They are also much heavier than a bike and three or four times as expensive.'
There was confusion over whether the new bicycle would comply with UK legislation because of the 'boost' button - giving it a top speed of 20mph.
Simon Brimley.the service manager for Ultra Motor UK said yesterday: "This type of transport is still in its infancy and will get more and more powerful as it goes on. In just the same way as electric cars will develop."
