All Our Patent Are Belong To You

Yesterday, there was a wall of Tesla patents in the lobby of our Palo Alto headquarters. That is no longer the case. They have been removed, in the spirit of the open source movement, for the advancement of electric vehicle technology.
Tesla Motors was created to accelerate the advent of sustainable transport. If we clear a path to the creation of compelling electric vehicles, but then lay intellectual property landmines behind us to inhibit others, we are acting in a manner contrary to that goal. Tesla will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology.
When I started out with my first company, Zip2, I thought patents were a good thing and worked hard to obtain them. And maybe they were good long ago, but too often these days they serve merely to stifle progress, entrench the positions of giant corporations and enrich those in the legal profession, rather than the actual inventors. After Zip2, when I realized that receiving a patent really just meant that you bought a lottery ticket to a lawsuit, I avoided them whenever possible.
At Tesla, however, we felt compelled to create patents out of concern that the big car companies would copy our technology and then use their massive manufacturing, sales and marketing power to overwhelm Tesla. We couldn’t have been more wrong. The unfortunate reality is the opposite: electric car programs (or programs for any vehicle that doesn’t burn hydrocarbons) at the major manufacturers are small to non-existent, constituting an average of far less than 1% of their total vehicle sales.
At best, the large automakers are producing electric cars with limited range in limited volume. Some produce no zero emission cars at all.
Given that annual new vehicle production is approaching 100 million per year and the global fleet is approximately 2 billion cars, it is impossible for Tesla to build electric cars fast enough to address the carbon crisis. By the same token, it means the market is enormous. Our true competition is not the small trickle of non-Tesla electric cars being produced, but rather the enormous flood of gasoline cars pouring out of the world’s factories every day.
We believe that Tesla, other companies making electric cars, and the world would all benefit from a common, rapidly-evolving technology platform.
Technology leadership is not defined by patents, which history has repeatedly shown to be small protection indeed against a determined competitor, but rather by the ability of a company to attract and motivate the world’s most talented engineers. We believe that applying the open source philosophy to our patents will strengthen rather than diminish Tesla’s position in this regard. Elon Musk."

After recent Lithium products price increase by industry majors we are not surprised to find this bullish report on our Mega Trend sector. We will address the news about Rare Earths new found bounty on the Pacific ocean floor in another post, but will mention now that by this time our loyal readers should already be able to distinguish between Lithium, Rare Metals and Rare Earths. Economic deposits and dirt containing anomalous elements will the story for another entry.

"Lithium Market: FMC Lithium Announces Global Price Increases. We have another one of Lithium Big Four announcing the global price increase for the lithium products. Now we can realize why all major industry insiders were searching and making deals in order to secure Lithium supply. Nobody would like be at the mercy of the Lithium OPEC when Electric Cars will go mainstream in the next five years time. Talking about OPEC - it took IEA to announce the release from Oil Strategic Reserves in order to bring Oil prices down. QE 3.0 has been started with this move - welcome into the Election Cycle.
Release was not very dramatic: 60 mln barrels - it is below one day world's oil consumption - but is very symbolic. All the talk about increasing Oil output can not bring the Oil prices down. We will take as a sign of the high Oil prices to stay. Before QE 3.0 will be unleashed to support the diving economy, Inflation fears must be knocked down and we had PPT operation in the Gold and Silver markets again yesterday. General markets were pumped up into the close from the dangerous waterfall zone on the technical side."

Peak Oil: Lithium Drive: EV Charging Stations Play An Integral Role In Smart Grid Tec tnr.v, czx.v, lmr.v, rm.v, alk.ax, sqm, fmc, roc, lit, li.v, wlc.v, clq.v, res.v, ree, avl.to, nsany, f, gm, rno.pa, dai, byddf, hev, aone, vlnc

The place where we are all going - post carbon society - implies that we have to be prepared to manage smart grid applications on our local community level or even at the level of households, when our energy generating (Solar, Wind), energy storage (Electric Cars) and main grid are all integrated in one smart system. Electric Cars will provide new opportunities for Vehicle to Grid systems and Lithium based storage systems become now part of new smart grid solutions. World is moving forward and this business will become not only the very important part of the successful Electric Cars roll out program, but the business opportunity itself.

"Electric Cars are coming on our streets and utility companies are getting ready to charge our future. All naysayers will be proven wrong in the end - we could only dream about the numbers of Electric Cars to be on the streets when they will put sizable constrain on the existing grid! This time will come and it will be matter of technological progress and investment into the smart grid to accommodate the new demand for electricity and flexible grid management.
It is a manageable task and presents an investment opportunity on its own. Who are the big players here - corporate "cream de la cream": GE, Google, Siemens, SAP, ABB and utilities companies world-wide amongst others. We are confident that they will manage to make electricity available for our Electric Cars in time.
Electricity could be produced from the number of sources, some of them could be renewable and their share will increase dramatically in the years to come  - Oil comes from depleting source and can not sustain our Energy diet any more."

They will allow the integration of different sources of energy into the smart grid systems: like solar, wind and existing generation plants. With more and more EVs on the streets we can start to talk about Car to Grid technology as well, when smart grid can talk to the EVs and use the energy from the EV battery during peak hours when electric cars are parked at the office and charge the EV from Energy Storage facility at night. Energy storage can be charge during the day using solar and wind power among other sources of energy in this scheme."

A123 supplies giant battery for 'hybrid power plant'
by Martin LaMonica

Lithium ion battery company A123 Systems today said that it will supply a 20-megawatt battery for grid storage in northern Chile, one of the larger projects to use batteries to fortify the grid.
AES Gener, a division of U.S.-based power generation company AES, will install 10 shipping container-size storage systems in northern Chile to work in conjunction with a new 500-megawatt power plant called Angamos.
The batteries will be used for "spinning reserves" to ensure grid reliability by filling gaps in power in that area, which needs a reliable supply of electricity for mining operations. The system is designed to supply its full power for 15 minutes.
The project follows a similar 12-megawatt battery installation AES did in Chile in 2009 with A123 Systems' products for frequency regulation. Rather than ramp up power production from natural gas plants to maintain a steady frequency, the grid draws on the batteries' storage for quick bursts of power.
Energy storage on the grid has been done for decades in the form of pumped hydro plants, but different types of storage, such as batteries and flywheels, are starting to take hold in the U.S. Batteries now are mainly used to improve reliability with short-term storage, but some projects are seeking longer-term storage coupled with wind and solar farms.
Lithium ion battery companies are targeting hybrid and electric vehicles, but grid storage is another important, if smaller, market. A123 Systems, which will supply batteries for Fisker's Karma plug-in hybrid, said it has sold 35 megawatts worth of grid storage."

Lithium Ion Battery Energy Storage System
U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu last week announced the finalising of a USD $17.1 million loan guarantee to support the construction of a 20 megawatt (MW) energy storage system using advanced lithium-ion batteries.

Located in Johnson City, New York, the AES project will improve stability for the associated mains power grid and reduce carbon emissions by allowing for more renewable energy sources like wind and solar power.

"Bringing more efficiency and reliability to the grid will help cut costs for consumers and power a cleaner energy future", said Secretary Chu.

Grid frequency regulation is needed to balance power generation and consumption and is usually maintained by burning additional fossil fuels such as coal at power plants. Power plants become very inefficient when power output rapidly ramps in response to short-term variation in power demand. Up to 7% of the USA's electricity generating capacity is set aside to provide grid stability.

The AES project instead uses battery technology and new software that will provide the same regulation at a lower price.

The AES project will include advanced lithium-ion battery cells from A123 Systems, Inc.  The company says its Smart Grid Stabilization System (SGSS) can respond in milliseconds compared to power plants which can take minutes to respond to a call to vary their power output. The system frees up plant capacity to enable a power company to focus on the primary function of baseload electricity generation.

A123 Systems says independent third party studies have found high-efficiency energy storage systems, such as the SGSS, for frequency regulation can reduce the associated emissions of carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide and nitrous oxide by as much as 80% over traditional power plant ancillary services.

Lithium Demand: EnerDel, ITOCHU Announce Second Smart Grid Battery Storage Project TNR.v, CZX.v, LI.v, RM.v, WLC.v, SQM, FMC, ROC, AONE, HEV, VLNC, PC

It is very encouraging to see another confirmation of Lithium based batteries used for secondary market in Utility Storage area. Any volume in Grid batteries applications with Lithium based technology will help to bring total cost of lithium batteries per kWh down and open doors to the wide range of Lithium based batteries applications for Utility Scale and Smart Grid technology sectors.
"Our main take from U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu Video :
"Price of Lithium batteries is in access of 1000 USD/kWh at the moment, with mass production it will drop to 300-400 USD/kWh ( S. GM is aiming now for 450 USD/kWH in a near term) and with recent technological advance we can talk about 100 USD/kWh as possibility."
As we have wrote before, lithium battery price of USD 25o per kWh will make production of Electric Cars cheaper than a comparable CV - you do not need automatic transmission as part of your power drive."

SmartGrid:

EnerDel, an American lithium-ion battery producer, reportedly entered into a partnership with the real estate arm of Japan's industrial trading giant, ITOCHU Corporation, to develop and produce the advanced battery systems for a residential smart grid energy storage project to be installed in a major apartment building near Tokyo.

The system will provide a critical link between renewable energy, high-speed charging for electric cars and the local utility grid.

According to EnerDel officials, this is the second such venture between the two companies, following the announcement last month that they are teaming up with Mazda Motor Corporation on a similar system using vehicles converted to electric drive using a platform designed and built by EnerDel and its partner THINK, which will be stationed at a Family Mart convenience store.

"These are the first projects anywhere in the world to bring all the critical elements of a smart, sustainable network that connects renewable energy and transportation in the places where people live and work," Naoki Ota, chief operating officer for EnerDel, said in a statement.

Ota said that it will also demonstrate that EnerDel's lithium-ion battery systems are equally capable, whether it is in a car or a stationary grid application. He said that the company’s longstanding partnership with ITOCHU has provided the means to set another exciting industry precedent.

“We are delighted to be partnering again with ITOCHU to develop this industry leading project," Charles Gassenheimer, chairman and CEO of EnerDel parent company, Ener1, said.

Gassenheimer said that the company is pushing hard to drive pioneering initiatives like this to develop a secondary market for automotive grade lithium-ion batteries.

“I believe this secondary market will be a key enabler to reducing battery costs for automotive buyers and accelerating the growth of the market for electric powered vehicles," he said."
