Last week we saw the news on numerous websites about the new magic battery from German start up DBM Energy, which allows to power an Electric Car for...600 km! We were digging the information and now can tell you - that if this information will be confirmed - we have a breakthrough in lithium  battery technology. We do not know the cost of this battery at this moment, its specific power and other specs, but claims are so impressive, that we still need further confirmation and verification by the third parties.

Over 300 Wh/kg - to put it in perspective - Nissan Leaf 24 kWh battery will be in this case 80 kg! Now weight of the battery pack for Nissan Leaf is 300kg. Renault Fluence 22 kWh battery weight is 250 kg.

Lifetime of 2500 Charge cycles without degradation - if you drive 200km every day and have to charge this battery every 3 days - you have 20 years of lifespan of this battery! Everything with a solid 10 year warranty will work for Electric Cars mass market. Solution so far was 8 year warranty by GM Volt and Nissan Leaf and Renault actually announced that they will lease the lithium batteries - we called it the breakthrough for EV mass market at the time.

6 min charge time for 100 kWh - it is important to know with what kind of a fast charger it was done, but in anyway - if battery can sustain 2500 cycles with this kind of fast charger - it is another breakthrough. Question will in Charging Infrastructure, but it is 6 min for 100 kWh - too good to be true.

Even if these claims will be true by only half in a normal market and industrial conditions we, maybe, have already stepped in another era for EVs. Lithium and REE resources will gain their strategic importance overnight now. Confirmation of these claims by DBM Energy means that we can move today to Electric Cars, even without the claimed cost advantage vs "normal" lithium cells technology. Even if the price now will happen to be the same as known technology - mass market production of electric cars will bring prices of the batteries down faster than 8% per year according to Elon Musk from Tesla Motors.

DBM Energy's electric Audi A2 completes record setting 372 mile drive on a single charge





116 miles in an electric vehicle? No problem. But you'll quite literally be pushing your new Nissan Leaf another 250 miles to achieve what's being hailed as a world record in Germany. Little Lekker Mobil, a four-seat Audi A2 refitted with an experimental electric powerplant as part of a government sponsored project with Germany's lekker Energie and DBM Energy, just completed a 372-mile (600-km) stretch of road between Munich and Berlin on a single charge, a journey that lasted around seven hours. Even with the heater running, the modified A2 with fully usable trunk arrived with spare electricity in the "tank." The battery uses DBM Energy's KOLIBRI AlphaPolymer Technology said to be 97 percent efficient and chargeable from virtually any socket -- plug it into a high voltage DC source and it can be fully charged in just six minutes according to the car's driver and battery inventor, Mirko Hannemann. While Hannemann wouldn't be pinned down on pricing for the battery, the 27 year old did say that it would be more powerful and cheaper than conventional lithium ion batteries. He even went so far as to suggest that his company was ready to begin mass production of the batteries now -- presumably aided by the large sacks of money he'll be handed after pulling off the record breaking stunt."

Chancellor Angela Merkel insisted the desire of Germany to lead market electric vehicles in Germany and the will to innovate. Just two months later appear to aversieren reports of major auto companies to the contrary.

So bought Daimler in China and USA, Volkswagen and BMW also drive more and more with foreign batteries and all with German funding? None of the companies in their actions shows real interest in battery technologies, which are virtually on their doorstep. Instead, they always give the advantages of conventional Verbrennertechnologie for the best.

The DBM is now publishing a book of presentation showing the current state of battery technology for electric vehicles and industrial power supply and raises the question why is the electric vehicles from becoming even when the battery is not the problem?

Important issues that were worked up by using scientific studies, they form the basis for the book "Lithium - A new era of energy storage". The book compares the lithium polymer-based technology to conventional batteries, as well as conventional lithium-ion batteries, and shows how the new technology applications that will be seen only by lobbyists in the distant future, already makes it possible.

If only Electric Scooters can have at least 25% growth rate of Electric Bikes in China, our mass markets for EVs will be taking off very fast.

They are destined to be a hit in Europe, where CE scooters are presented already in a mass market fashion. Huge growing markets in Asia will be the next step in developing of this EV segment. Paris Motor Show 2010 has put on the map a few models ready to go on the market: Peugeot have a few models alone among other automakers.

  Here you can see the place of Cobalt in some chemistry's of Lithium ion batteries. Yesterday's announcement from GE about "the biggest ever" order for the EVs will bring Obama's target one step closer. It looks like at least some people in US Corp. board room are taking situation seriously.

Statement by Energy Secretary Steven Chu on Groundbreaking of BASF Advanced Battery Materials Plant

Recovery Act Investment Will Support Job Creation, U.S. Economic Competitiveness and Advanced Vehicle Industry

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu issued the following statement on today's groundbreaking of BASF's new production plant for advanced lithium-ion battery materials, funded in part through the Department of Energy's Vehicle Technologies Program.
"This groundbreaking is an illustration of how Recovery Act investments are creating jobs and building new industries here in the U.S.  Today's announcement puts Elyria at the forefront of innovation in America's automotive industry.  This region will stand as an example of America's economic competitiveness and our commitment to supporting a strong manufacturing industry," said Secretary Chu.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON TODAY'S ANNOUNCEMENT
BASF Catalysts, LLC was awarded $24.6 million under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to establish a facility to produce 2,500 metric tons per year of nickel-cobalt-metal cathode materials, a critical component of lithium-ion batteries for electric and hybrid electric vehicles.  This investment will help to continue bringing down the cost of batteries while improving their safety, energy and power.  The technology included in the batteries is licensed from the Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory, and when the plant is fully operational in 2012, it is expected to be the most advanced cathode materials production plant in North America. Improvements in the cost and efficiency of the lithium-ion batteries that are used in most plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and battery electric vehicles will support the growing deployment of electric vehicles and help to reach President Obama's goal of having one million electric drive vehicles on U.S. roads by 2015. This project is one of 48 advanced battery and electric drive projects that were awarded $2.4 billion through the Vehicle Technologies Program under the Recovery Act.

"Today everybody is exited about REE, tomorrow Peak Oil time will come and Lithium will make the headlines again. During excitement stage it is easy to make the wrong decision and chase the mini bubbles only to see them to pop - do not mistake the mega trends, Next Big Thing and parabolic rises. There is time to buy and time to sell. REE gives us a very good example - what can happen with a very small sector, when the all world depends on it. Peak Oil realisation will be next.   Potentially we can talk here about the order for EVs with a magnitude of tens of thousands electric cars which will be on the streets very soon. This is  the step into the right direction! We hope that GE will not disappoint with the final numbers to be released next week. Adoption rate for EVs will depend on the production volume, which can allow to reduce the cost of Electric Cars. Commercial users - like GE - apart from all other benefits to the all other consumers will benefit in PR and brand building by projecting their environmentally friendly image. Commercial fleets will allow EV to gain momentum in the market place. Today we have a very important step into this direction - we think that other corporations will follow the GE lead.

Oct. 29 (Bloomberg) -- General Electric Co. may jump-start the electric-vehicle industry with an order that Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Immelt said will be the largest in history.
GE, whose power-generation equipment provides a third of the worldʼs electricity, will order “tens of thousands” of the vehicles in about a week, Immelt said yesterday in a speech in London, without giving a total or identifying a manufacturer.
“This is a huge step up,” said Brett Smith, a vehicle technology analyst at the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Michigan. “Itʼs the biggest order to date Iʼm aware of, by a lot.”
Expanding the worldʼs fleet of electric vehicles would bolster GE as it expands so-called clean-energy technology such as car chargers, solar panels and wind turbines. For every dollar of electric-vehicle sales, GE estimates it may get 10 cents in revenue, said Gary Sheffer, a spokesman.
Immelt said half of GEʼs sales force of about 45,000 will drive electric vehicles. The Fairfield, Connecticut-based company also has a vehicle-leasing division through its GE Capital finance unit. Financial terms and other details about the order arenʼt yet being disclosed, GE said.
GE is investing $10 billion over the next five years in clean energy across its business lines, including power- transmission software and so-called smart- grid technologies. Its products include lithium-ion batteries for cars and trucks via a venture with A123 Systems Inc. and sodium-based batteries for use in large vehicles such as locomotives.
Creating Jobs That spending creates jobs, Immelt told executives at an event sponsored by the University of Cambridgeʼs Programme for Sustainability Leadership.
“GE has been one of the biggest players in this game and certainly has a lot to gain from the electric vehicle,” Smith said. “Theyʼve really truly tried to push this hard to get things going, and it seems to be a core corporate value.”
GE fell 4 cents to $16.04 at 11:53 a.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. Shares of A123 climbed 11 cents, or 1.1 percent, to $9.78 on the Nasdaq Stock Market.
An order the size of GEʼs probably would come from several vehicle makers, Smith said.
Automakers preparing to sell vehicles powered solely by batteries over the next 18 months include Nissan Motor Co., which starts delivering Leaf hatchbacks late this year; Ford Motor Co., readying electric versions of its Transit Connect delivery van and Focus compact car; and Toyota Motor Corp., which will sell a rechargeable RAV4 sport-utility vehicle.
Global Outlook
General Motors Co. begins delivering plug-in Volt hybrids this year, and Honda Motor Co., Chrysler LLC, Bayerische Motoren Werke AG and other large brands are preparing battery vehicles due by 2012.
Combined deliveries of hybrids, such as Toyotaʼs Prius, and battery-powered cars may reach 5.2 million by 2020, according to an Oct. 27 forecast by J.D. Power & Associates. That would be about 7.3 percent of the projected global vehicle market.
Immelt used his remarks in London to renew his call for increased private spending on renewable-energy investments.
“Now is exactly the time, because itʼs less popular, where we have to invest more,” Immelt said. “We have to do it more courageously. And weʼre going to have to go forward for a while without government at our backs.”
GE Energy Infrastructure is the companyʼs biggest industrial unit, accounting for $37 billion of the parent companyʼs $157 billion in revenue last year. GE is also the worldʼs largest maker of locomotives, jet engines, medical- imaging equipment and related information technology systems.
GE is the largest shareholder for Watertown, Massachusetts- based A123, which has signed agreements with Navistar International Corp. and Fisker Automotive Inc. to supply advanced batteries for their vehicles.
