It is a serious piece of Japanese engineering with a lot of attention to the safety, functionality and detail.



  Nobody would like to entertain the idea of sitting on the giant powerful battery and being electrocuted in the first rain - now you can be relieved with this video, that safety in Electric Cars as paramount as in any vehicle from the serious auto brand.
  Technology is here - now we need the volume to make the prices go down and bring us our iPod moment in Electric Cars."

  After all recent mass media storm about GM Volt final transmission decision with mechanical connection in the generator mode, we are wondering whether Tesla will be able to come up with the numbers announced before.

  "The most important message is in the headline - you can have now your own "Home Gas Station" while you have electricity bills paid. We have the technology to survive the Oil Shock and it will be soon on our roads in numbers.

Could it be done better - no questions, particularly, on PR part. Nissan Leaf will keep GM on its toes and coming competition from all EV automakers will be the most important for establishing mass market for EVs.

More important, than the question of EV purity, will be in the end the efficiency and cost structure of the total ownership of EV."

 
 
Numbers provided by Tesla for Model S are so impressive, compare to other automakers, that we will be worrying now, whether they can actually deliver this specification at the announced price "starting from 49,000 after rebate" - even if we assume that it will be the basic battery package for 160 miles range. Delivery is expected now in 2012 - we will start to monitor the situation and stock performance from now.

   "We can mark the GM Volt roll out controversy as the start of Nissan Leaf roll out campaign. It will be interesting to see the next chapters in this ongoing web and mass media drama. Sometimes stupid things could be viewed as a genius marketing moves later. GM Volt dance comes to mind in this sense as well.
Nissan Leaf is rumping up its promo campaign now:

  We still think that even this amount of corporate stupidity - on part of PR at GM - will not kill the idea about an electric car from GM second time. GM Volt has a lot of unique features and can not be called in the end just an "overcharged Prius." We are very pleased, personally, to confirm - that GM Volt will be able to drive in a pure electric mode: at least with fully charged battery until it will be depleted and the generator will kick in, which can have a mechanical connection to transmission in that mode at different speed ranges, contrary to everything we have heard before.
  We will refer you to the "The EVcast episode" this week discussing this issue at depth.

  Here we think we will be up to the new surprises. We like REV idea as a transition point between CEV, or "Thermal" as they call it in Europe, and EV space - you will not have any Range Anxiety and can have only one car in your household to meet all your family transportation needs.
  But this convenience will come at a price: higher sticker one to start with - 41k for GM Volt before rebates - and higher servicing costs: basically you have even in GM Volt - plug in hybrid scheme - EV architecture plus generator and transmission as per GM Volt powertrain architecture. It will add in servicing cost (generator is the CE with oil, filters and bands) and in weight, which can reduce efficiency.
  Here we will see, whether we will be up to the surprise from Nissan Leaf later. GM Volt has announced now revised EV range 35 - 50 miles per full charge and that they will use more than half of the battery pack capacity - something more like 10kWh out of total 16kWh lithium battery. It means that with range 40 miles (which is already debated to be more closer to 30 miles in actual driving conditions) GM Volt will use 0.25kWh per mile. In Nissan Leaf case we have announced 100 mile range (we will see reports about actual driving conditions here as well) with 24kWh lithium battery - 0.24kWh per mile. Please note, that here we have assumed that Nissan Leaf will use 100% of its battery capacity. Either Nissan Leaf will be more conservative in the end on its efficiency vs GM Volt in a pure electric mode or GM Volt is not that efficient compare to Nissan Leaf.

  "We saw the future and it is electric...Renault is the most aggressive one in speed to the market and pricing: Fluence will go at 22k euro after 5k euro state rebate and with lease for battery at 79 euro per month. The idea is that after state rebate in France this full size family sedan EV will be priced similar to "thermal one" - as they call it. No hassle with the battery - it belongs to Renault. At recent gas prices in Europe, running cost for lease of the battery and electricity will be the same as for CE car for average usage. Actual total ownership cost will be lower, when you take into account the after sale service. Situation will change dramatically with higher gas prices. We think that it is the game changer for EV mass market acceptance."

  Chinese automaker BYD is making headlines again this time with BYD ready for mass market roll out of its electric cars in Germany starting in 2012. Germany must be taken their military report warning about Peak Oil very seriously and are taking actions now. It is very encouraging to see that electric utilities like RWE are taking a very active participation in electrification of German transportation system.

"Now Chinese BYD backed by Warren Buffett moves to secure supply of Lithium. It looks like every major lithium end user would like to participate in Lithium mining company to ensure supply of this strategic commodity. As you can guess, there are not so many Lithium developers left to chose from."

The move could pressure German carmakers to ramp up mass production of their own electric vehicles.



RWE and China's BYD have teamed to bring electrical cars to Germany, beginning with a trial fleet in 2011. A mass rollout in Germany and several other European markets is planned the following year.



The deal with the Chinese company, a battery specialist that has since expanded into car manufacturing, follows a string of agreements with other manufacturers, including France's Renault, Japan's Nissan and Daimler.



The centrepiece of the agreement is a package deal for electric car enthusiasts, consisting of BYD's electric vehicles and RWE's fast-charging posts and electricity supplied exclusively from renewable sources. Two models will be initially available and targeted primarily at consumers in cities driving shorter distances.



Already on the market



The one model is a plug-in hybrid car that combines new electric and conventional internal combustion systems. On the market in China since early this year, it has a range of between 60 and 100 kilometers when running only on electricity. The other newer model will be a purely electric vehicle with a battery range of about 300 kilometers and an acceleration of 0 to 100 kilometers per hour within 10 seconds.

The package will include a fast-charging device from RWE, access to the company's expanding network of public charging points – now at around 450 – and electricity generated by wind and solar systems.



RWE spokesman Peter Hoscheidt told Deutsche Welle that no decision has yet been reached on whether the cars and charging unit can be leased in addition to being purchased or both and what the prices will be. But he said both options will be likely and prices will be attractive to garner attention.



In Berlin, the German energy company is already collaborating with Daimler in a field trial. They're testing Smart cars powered by lithium-ion batteries, which can be charged at home and public supply points. The collaboration is one of several electric car initiatives running under the German government's e-mobility program.



Seeking standardization



Through their collaboration, RWE and BYD also hope to contribute to standardization efforts in the nascent electric car industry. Standardized components are crucial to kick start mass production. But the standardization process of a new technology, like electrically powered cars, is often accompanied by power struggles between groups seeking recognition of their own systems as standards in order to collect royalty fees down the road.

Why the cooperation with a Chinese manufacturer now? Because the Chinese, Hoscheidt said, promise mass production by 2012, thus ensuring a sufficient supply of competitively priced vehicles.



"This is by no means an exclusive agreement," he said. "We're seeking partners to push electric cars. The sooner they can deliver, the better."



Coveted battery technolgy



Earlier this year, BYD and Daimler signed an agreement to develop and build electric cars for the Chinese market. The cars will be sold under a jointly owned brand. Daimler plans to take advantage of BYD's battery technology to help boost Chinese sales.



BYD is China's sixth-biggest car manufacturer by sales last year. American billionaire Warren Buffet owns 10 percent of the company.



But Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer, a professor at the University of Duisburg-Essen and an expert on the German auto industry warns about expecting too much too soon from Chinese car makers.



"Let's see what comes," he told Deutsche Welle. "We've seen a few Chinese manufacturers come to Europe, and they've failed."



BYD's car sales have been dropping noticeably in its home market, according to Dudenhoeffer. "There's plenty of demand in China but other cars are apparently in greater demand," he said.



Nevertheless, Dudenhoeffer welcomes the latest attempt to push electric cars in Germany.



"There's a lot more happening in a number of countries like France," he said, pointing to financial incentives. "In Germany, there's still just a lot of hot air."

  Hyundai has weathered the financial storm much better than a lot of other automakers. Low cost production and raised standard of quality have put this company in direct competition with Toyota and company steady is rising its market share. For our Lithium bull market story this move by Korean automaker is very significant as Hyundai goes directly into Lithium ion technology for the batteries. South Korean companies were very active lately in making deals to secure lithium supply.

SEOUL - HYUNDAI Motor, South Korea's No.1 carmaker, unveiled its first pure electric car on Thursday, with a goal of commencing mass production of the vehicles in 2012.



The 'BlueOn,' based on its i10 hatchback, will be powered by batteries made by SK Energy with a capacity of 16.4 kilowatts per hour, Hyundai said in a statement, without disclosing prices for the vehicle. The BlueOn can run 140 kilometres on a single charge and features a maximum speed of 130kmh, it said.



Hyundai will produce and supply a small number of electric vehicles to government agencies this year and next before commencing sales to the general public in 2012, by which it plans to manufacture 2,500 units, Hyundai said.



Hyundai said it was early too say in which markets the BlueOn would be launched first. 'We are taking a baby step. There is no infrastructure such as charging stations in Korea and many other countries,' a spokesperson said.



There are a number of electric vehicles in the works by other automakers, but their high cost and the limited range are cited as the biggest hurdles for their widespread adoption. Japan's Mitsubishi Motors Corp was the first major carmaker to roll out pure electric cars. Its i-MiEV electric car was introduced in Japan in August.



Nissan Motor Co plans to introduce a mass-market electric car in the United States in December. Ford will have an all-electric version of its Focus available in late 2011. The government said on Thursday that South Korea plans replace 20 per cent of the country's passenger cars with electric vehicles by 2020 with a goal to lead the emerging market. -- REUTERS"
